Why Natural Bar Soaps Are Better

Why Natural Bar Soaps Are Better

Why natural soap is Better?

Handmade soap contains glycerin which is a natural byproduct of the soap making process, an excellent moisturizer and also one of the reasons that handmade soap is so good for your skin!

Glycerin is an emollient which attracts moisture from the air maintaining moisture in the skin throughout the day.  Store bought, mass-produced bars normally do not contain glycerin and can leave your skin feeling dry and irritated. Not being real soap, they contain detergents which strip skin of its natural oils.  They use synthetic ingredients to achieve things such as a thick lather or specific hardness of the bar. On top of being moisturizing, NWN handmade soap achieves these properties by having the correct ratios of plant-based oils and other natural ingredients.

Typical factory made store-bought soaps have had all of the glycerin removed and placed into additional products such as lotions and creams. The reason is instead of buying one product that will clean and moisturize, (such as handmade soap) a consumer now has to buy two products to serve the same purpose. Sneaky!  The main driver behind using these synthetic, drying ingredients as well as removing glycerin is all to save money from their bottom line, not to offer you quality skin care!

Mass Produced “Soap” Can Be Bad For My Health

Big soap and skin care manufacturers have a dirty secret. The FDA doesn’t require disclosure of the ingredients contained in a company’s trademark “fragrance” on its label. This means that scented soap could contain harmful chemicals without the buyer knowing. Some of these chemical concoctions have been found to be skin irritants and even to contain known carcinogens: Expert Panel Confirms Fragrance Ingredients Can Cause Cancer

Besides fragrance, large manufactures tend to use synthetic preservatives such as parabens which have been linked to breast tumors.  Sodium lauryl sulfate is a very widely used ingredient that makes soap extra foamy, however, at the same time it is a known hormone disruptor. Using these ingredients is good for these company’s bottom line, but not for your health.

For my handmade soap, I only use plant-based natural ingredients.  I start with a base of organic olive oil, organic sustain-ably sourced palm oil, and organic coconut oil.  Olive oil is a great moisturizer, palm oil creates a rich lather, and coconut oil has excellent cleansing strength. I then add essential oils and plant based special ingredients for their healing and calming properties.  My soap is long lasting and washes away cleanly due to the precise ratio of oils used in each recipe. After use, skin feels moisturized, silky and clean. No need for harsh, dangerous, synthetic chemicals!

andmade soap is full of skin-loving properties and should become part of your daily skincare routine. Here are three reasons why you should ditch that bar of store-bought soap for good and make the switch to homemade natural soap!

1. HANDMADE SOAP IS MOISTURIZING

A natural by-product of the soap making process is glycerin. Glycerin is a skin moisturizer, emollient (skin softener) and a humectant (draws moisture to it). When made traditionally, soap contains glycerin which hydrates the skin while bathing.

Commercially-produced (or store-bought) soaps are commonly processed to extract the glycerin. The removed glycerin is then manufactured in other profitable products such as lotions and creams. Soap without glycerin is harsh and drying; using it can lead to excessively dry, itchy and ashy skin.

Handmade soaps retain their natural glycerin, therefore providing a key ingredient needed to prevent dry skin.

2. HANDMADE SOAP CONTAINS BETTER INGREDIENTS

Soap manufactured for mass distribution contains synthetic ingredients that are cheap to fabricate in a lab.

Unfortunately, these artificial ingredients are DISASTROUS for our endocrine, immune, reproductive and respiratory systems, not to mention what they do to our skin.

Many of these toxic materials, such as propylene glycol, have known side effects such as dermatitis (skin rashes) and eczema. Many of these toxins are foolishly added to soap to produce desired results such as increased lather, stability and creaminess.

Handmade soaps on the other hand are typically made using natural ingredients such as shea butter, olive oil, avocado oil and cocoa butter which are gentle and nourishing to the skin.

The artisan's choice of ingredients determines whether the soap has a rich, creamy lather or soft, airy bubbles. To harden the soap, the artisan may add more olive oil; to give it tons of bubbles, castor oil may be added.

With experience and time, the soap comes out just right using nature’s finest ingredients, not harsh chemicals.

Fragrance oils vs. Essential Oils

Another major difference is the addition of essential oils versus fragrance oils.

Fragrance oils are artificial scents that are used in many products from soap to body washes, candles, lotions, perfumes, laundry detergent and dryer sheets (actually, the list goes on and on).

While the FDA allows manufacturers to list only "fragrance" as an ingredient, each fragrance can contain thousands of chemicals, some of which are the most toxic in the skincare industry.

Essential oils on the other hand are 100% pure oils extracted from plant material.

When essential oils are applied to the skin or inhaled when showering with soap, they release a symphony of aromas that have been known to cause positive psychological effects.

By choosing soaps made with essential oils, you naturally gain the mental/emotional/spiritual benefits of nature's luxurious gifts while smelling amazing! This is NOT the case with fragrance oils which merely impart an artificial scent.

3. HANDMADE SOAP IS UNIQUE

Store-bought soaps are mass-produced in factories that value maximizing their profits at the expense of the average man/woman. Every single bar is identical; in fact if a bar is found that isn’t, it’s considered defective and tossed.

This sterile, assembly-line style of producing soap cannot invoke the same kind of magic as a homemade natural soap.

Handmade soap is 100% unique.

Handcrafted by Artisans

While each and every bar comes out looking slightly different, the true nature of uniqueness comes from those who make the soaps themselves.
